Speech by John C Tsang, JP Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology
of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government of the People's Republic of China
at the China Reception for ITU Telecom World 2006 on 8 September 2004
Vice Minister Jiang, Secretary-General, Your Excellencies, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I am delighted to have the opportunity of co-hosting this reception with my good friend, Vice Minister Jiang, in welcoming all of you, our honoured guests, here this evening and launching the ITU Telecom World 2006 in Hong Kong.
2. I am sure that those of you who have taken part in ITU Telecom Asia 2000 and 2002 in Hong Kong would still have fond memories of those occasions. I am certain that ITU Telecom World 2006 in Hong Kong will again be another spectacular experience for you. While Telecom World 2006, like previous events, will continue to be the major international platform for networking and sharing of visions and insights, you will notice in the Hong Kong event a number of special features.
3. In terms of "hardware", we are building a new exhibition venue with state-of-the-art facilities next to the airport to accommodate this ITU event. In terms of "software", we intend to provide a range of services to help participants explore business opportunities with potential partners, particularly those coming from Mainland China. For your spouse and family members, our Tourism Board will help to put together special sightseeing packages to make your stay in Hong Kong an even more memorable one. If you have not yet attended one of our presentations on ITU Telecom World 2006, I urge you to consider taking some time out tomorrow to join one.
4. I hope you enjoy our hospitality this evening, and I look forward to welcoming you and your family members to ITU Telecom World 2006 in my hometown, Hong Kong, Asia's World City.
5. Thank you.
