Hong Kong and Mainland sign Co-operation Arrangement in the Area of Intellectual Property

     The Commerce and Economic Development Bureau (CEDB) and the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) signed the Co-operation Arrangement in the Area of Intellectual Property today (June 28), with a view to fostering exchanges and co-operation in the area of intellectual property between the two sides.

     The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Gregory So, and the Commissioner of the SIPO, Mr Shen Changyu, signed the Co-operation Arrangement on behalf of the CEDB and the SIPO respectively.

     Areas covered by the Co-operation Arrangement include:

- exchange of information on intellectual property laws and protection as well as publicity and education;
- study and promotion of the development of intellectual property trading;
- co-organisation of exhibitions and seminars on intellectual property; and
- further co-operation in the area of patents.

     Mr So said, "The SIPO has been providing Hong Kong with staunch support and technical assistance in our work on intellectual property. The Co-operation Arrangement reaffirms the critical role played by intellectual property in promoting innovation and economic growth nowadays. It also provides an important basis for both sides to strengthen future exchanges and co-operation. I look forward to joint efforts by Hong Kong and the Mainland to explore, develop and embrace new opportunities in the area of intellectual property for mutual benefits."
