On 22 September 2009, the Chief Executive in Council has decided on the way forward in respect of public service broadcasting (PSB) and the future of Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK).
Having carefully studied the report submitted by the Committee of Review on PSB (Review Committee) and taking into account the views of various stakeholders and all other relevant factors, the Government has decided to task RTHK to take up the mission as the public service broadcaster for Hong Kong. RTHK will continue to serve the community as a Government department, with key recommendations of the Review Committee implemented to allow it to fulfill its role as a public service broadcaster with strengthened corporate governance and greater accountability to the community.
The Commerce and Economic Development Bureau issued a consultation paper entitled “The New Radio Television Hong Kong: Fulfilling its Mission as a Public Service Broadcaster” in October 2009. The purpose was to seek views from the public in respect of the proposals to enhance the role and functions of RTHK as a public service broadcaster. The consultation period ended in January 2010. The consultation report has been released.
